How each state's draw works

Every western state runs its draw differently: preference points, bonus points, squared bonus points or a straight random draw. Pick a state to see how it works and how to start building points. The full step-by-step guides are part of membership.

Bonus pointsArizona

Arizona uses bonus points.

Mixed point systemsColorado

Colorado uses preference points: in the spring primary draw, applicants with the most points for a species draw first.

Random draw, no pointsIdaho

Idaho has no preference or bonus points.

Mixed point systemsMontana

Montana uses squared bonus points for most limited permits and licenses, including moose, sheep, goat, and deer and elk permits.

Squared bonus pointsNevada

Nevada uses squared bonus points: your points are squared to decide how many extra draw numbers you get, so each added point helps more than the last.

Random draw, no pointsNew Mexico

New Mexico has no preference or bonus points.

Preference pointsOregon

Oregon uses a modified preference point system: 75% of controlled deer, elk, pronghorn and spring bear tags go to first-choice applicants with the most points, and 25% are drawn at random among all first-choice applicants.

Mixed point systemsUtah

Utah uses two point systems.

Preference pointsWyoming

Wyoming uses preference points, but who can use them depends on residency and species.
